What is the Difference Between STSOL & MLTSSL for Australian PR Visa?

STOL and MLTSSL are the Australia’s occupational demand list in which certain occupations are listed under Australia’s permanent and temporary skilled visa programs which makes a potential applicant eligible to apply for Australia PR.

STSOL stands for Short Term Skilled Occupational Demand list which was earlier known as Skilled Occupational List (CSOL), whereas MLTSSL stands for Medium- and Long-Term Strategic Skill List which was earlier known as Consolidated Skilled Occupational Skilled List (SOL).

STSOL consists list of occupations which are high in demand in Australia. If you want to apply for Australia sponsored Permanent Residency (subclass 190) your occupation must lie in the relevant STSOL list and you must have an invitation/sponsorship from the state government. This list is also a part of Australia Point system. If eligible, you can live and work in Australia for indefinite period.

MLTSSL is the occupational demand list which is in high demand across various states and territories of Australia. Thus, if you want to apply for Australia Independent visa (subclass 189) or Australia Regional Provisional visa (Subclass 489) your occupation must fall under this category. If eligible, you can live and work anywhere in Australia on a permanent basis.

Short Term Skill Occupation List (STSOL) is the Australia demand List which was earlier known as Consolidated Sponsored Occupation List. The list contains 242 occupations that are currently in high demand in Australia.

The government has removed around 200 occupations from its latest demand list. Additionally, 24 occupations listed on STSOL will now only be eligible for positions located in regional Australia (for the subclass 457 and the subclass 186) and for the State and Territory Nominated stream of the subclass 489.

Thus, to apply for state nominated visas, make sure to check whether your nominated occupation is currently in demand or not in the Australian labour market.

Medium- and Long-Term Strategic Skill List (MLTSSL) was earlier known as The Skilled Occupation List (SOL). The list contains close to 176 occupations. The list mentions those occupations that are currently in high demand in Australia. Since, Australia is in constant need to fill the labour gap with the highly skilled and qualified workers for the betterment of their economy. The immigration department closely acts as a watchdog for the occupations which the country needs currently.

This List is Applicable to those Applicants Who:

  • Wants to apply for Australia Independent Subclass 189
  • Are issued an invitation on or after March 18, 2018 to make an application for visa 189
  • Wants to apply for Australia Skilled Regional Provisional Subclass 489
  • Are issued an invitation on or after March 18, 2018 to make an application for visa 489

The new list has been effective from April 19, 2018. A candidate before applying for Australia Permanent Residency should make sure to check the nominated occupation in which he/she is intended to apply is listed on MLTSSL or not.
